Asbestos is the name of a group of minerals that occur naturally as masses of strong, flexible fibers that can be separated into thin threads and woven. Asbestos is widely used in various industrial products including cement, brake linings, roof shingles, floor insulation and textiles.
As a small floating particles of asbestos into the air, especially during the production process can be inhaled or ingested, can cause serious health problems. In addition to mesothelioma, exposure to asbestos increase the risk of lung cancer, asbestosis (a noncancerous, chronic lung disease) and other cancers, such as the larynx and kidney.
The combination of smoking and asbestos exposure significantly increases the risk of developing cancer of the road on the air in the lungs. Kent brand of cigarettes used asbestos in the filters for the first year of production in 1950 and some cases of mesothelioma product. Smoking current cigarettes does not appear to increase the risk of mesothelioma.
